Starr is an active and engaged member of the Chicago legal community.
She was recently appointed to serve on the Judicial Evaluation Committee of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois (WBAI). Through this appointment, Starr investigates and interviews judicial candidates seeking appointment or election to state and federal judgeships. Starr understands that the fairness and effectiveness we expect from our civil and criminal justice systems would be impossible absent qualified and impartial judges. She is honored and humbled to have been selected to ensure that future judges appreciate and are prepared to meet the substantial burdens placed on their shoulders.
Starr also serves as a Chair of the WBAI Leadership Institute, a six-month program dedicated to helping women attorneys become more effective leaders at work and within their communities. Once a month, participants are invited to attend informational sessions and panel presentations featuring fellow attorneys, community leaders and trailblazers in business. These sessions offer practical and timely advice concerning overcoming gender bias, marketing, rainmaking, serving on community and business boards, and public speaking. At the end of the Institute, participants are equipped with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to make their professional dreams a reality.
Formerly, Starr served on the Associate Board of the Chicago Committee, the sole organization in Chicago dedicated to increasing diversity and fostering equality within Chicago-area law firms. As part of her Associate Board service, Starr conceived, organized and moderated a day-long boot camp for junior associates.
The Chicago Committee Law Firm Boot Camp offered young attorneys the opportunity to learn from, and network with, senior associates and partners who had built impressive careers at a variety of law firms in Chicago. The boot camp attendees gained valuable advice on a range of topics, including pursuing professional development, building client relationships, finding mentors and sponsors, and navigating law firm politics. The boot camp was the highest attended event during Starr’s tenure on the Associate Board and has become a staple of Chicago Committee programming.
